Running the wide open prairies and Badlands of North Dakota
If you've never visited the vast expanse of the American Prairie or experienced the power of the Badlands, you'll be amazed by the variety and appeal of North Dakota's Maah Daah Hey Trail. Here, on the Maah Daah Hey Trail, you will run in the footsteps of Sioux Indian Chief Sitting Bull (who's wild mustang herds, direct descendents of his own mustangs, are still found along the Maah Daah Hey Trail) and former President and conservationist Teddy Roosevelt. This is wild country particularly suited for backcountry running adventures. Often called the Serengeti of the Great Plains, you might see bison, elk, bighorn sheep, wild horses, pronghorn antelope, coyote, and wild turkey along the trail. The Maah Daah Hey Trail offers great singletrack running among the buttes and rolling prairie. Before you think this is just a flat prairie trail, take a closer look and you'll find rugged buttes, badlands and scenic vistas abound. The variety of terrain will add interest and challenge to our adventure. And, you'll be amazed by the starry night skies around the campfire in the evening. This is a unique trail running adventure you won't want to miss!
Trip Details
Duration/Mileage: 5 days/87 miles Difficulty: Intermediate - rough, overgrown trail in spots, moderate distance with a couple long running days, moderate elevation change, altitude negligible, access to support vehicle most days, opportunities to shorten the route most days, possible heat, distances between 13 and 22 miles. "One of the best running adventures I've ever been on. The trail was extremely challenging but the guides were very encouraging and supportive every step of the way. We were well fed and well supported the entire time. I would definitely do another tour with Adventure Running Co!"
