Segment if the Appalachian Trail with a runner from an Adventure Running Co's trail running experience
Exploring the Balds of North Carolina and Tennessee

Some of the finest open ridge running in the world can be found on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina and Tennessee.  Our run will traverse the mile-high open "Balds" for many miles, rarely descending to the scenic valleys below.  The trail, following the ridgeline for nearly our entire tour, often passes through scenic meadow and heath balds at places like Hump Mountain, Roan Mountain, Round Bald, Unaka Mountain, Big Bald and the aptly named Beauty Spot.  Many Appalachian Trail veterans consider this segment of the Appalachian Trail, with its superb views from treeless meadows above 5,000 feet, to be one of the most beautiful and spectacular segments along the entire 2,178 mile length of the trail.  You'll find the trail running sublime as you pass through these open meadows.  In short, this is a trail runners paradise!  Join us for this early season adventure on one of the best segments of trail for running on the East Coast!

Running High Above Lake Tahoe!

The 165 mile Tahoe Rim Trail circles one of the most beautiful lakes in the world - Lake Tahoe.  It winds through Aspen meadows, skirts high mountain peaks and runs for miles along ridgetops with stunning views.  On this Tahoe Rim tour we explore the eminently beautiful Northeast and East side of the trail with tremendous panoramic views, Mt. Rose, Marlette Lake, and spectacular boulders and rock outcroppings.  Some of the most stunning views from the Tahoe Rim trail can be found on this section, including the Flume Trail, which may be one of the more spectacular segments of trail anywhere.  We'll stay in comfortable summer homes and condominiums along the way with shuttle transport to and from the trailhead each day.  The trail is well developed and very runnable in most sections.  In fact, much of the segment of the Tahoe Rim Trail we run, is some of the most fun trail running you'll experience anywhere!  You won't soon forget the beautiful blue lake you'll run high above on this tour

"Our Lake Tahoe trip turned out to be just what we were looking for. Great trails, wonderful scenery, terrific guides, comfortable and convenient lodging, ample and tasty food, and fine companionship.  I will certainly be booking future trips with Adventure Running!"

Two women from Adventure Running Co's Yosemite Trail Running Tour experience
Running Yosemite’s most spectacular routes

Yosemite National Park and Yosemite Valley present some of the most magnificent terrain on the planet.  Our tour navigates the most spectacular trails through this remarkable landscape.  As the first federal land to be set aside for any kind of park in 1864 (Yellowstone is known to be the first national park, set aside in 1872), Yosemite is well known for it’s sheer cliffs, waterfalls, deep valleys, grand meadows, ancient giant sequoias and vast wilderness areas.  It is one of the most famous scenic areas in the world.  On our tour, we leave the crowds behind to explore some of the most famous sights in the park and some of the lesser known nooks and crannies that are just as wondrous.  From North Dome and El Capitan to Taft and Glacier Point, we take in all of this beauty while traversing the landscape on two feet in trail running shoes.   During the tour, you'll camp in lovely campsites, soak your tired legs and feet in the cool waters of the Merced and Tuolumne Rivers and enjoy tasty dinners with new running friends around a campfire.  Join us for this spectacular tour through the wonder that is Yosemite National Park!

"Andy and Kim (and their whole family) are some of the coolest people I've ever met. They immediately make you feel at home and ready for a fun, challenging running adventure regardless of your skill level. I can't imagine a better group to undertake such an endeavor. The course was divided into the perfect amount of days, our accommodations were very comfy and unique with delicious food, and the logistics were ironed out seamlessly without being inflexible. Can't wait to adventure with them again!"

Group on a guided tour experience tour of the Tour du Mont Blanc
Running around Mont Blanc through three countries!

The Tour du Mont Blanc is one of the most famous and spectacular long trails in the world.  On this tour we tackle the entire route around Mont Blanc, staying in comfortable Inns and Refugios along the way.  We'll begin our adventure in the world famous resort town of Chamonix - the region where trail running and just about every other outdoor adventure sport originated.  We'll start with a gondola ascent to Le Brevent and trek around Mt. Blanc in a counter-clockwise direction finishing where we started with a gondola ride back down to finish the tour.  As with all of our running tours, we will truly embrace the trail and the area we're running through.  This means we'll be staying in nice, traditional and historic inns along the way, with two nights in the Refugios that are famous in Europe and along the Mont Blanc Trail.  We'll truly immerse ourselves in the culture of the trail with our stays in the Refugios, sleeping alongside our trail companions!  We'll stay in comfortable hotels in Chamonix and Courmayer and in between we'll be in rustic, historic and comfortable Inns and Hotels that will give us a real feel for the countryside we're running through.  This tour will be one of the most spectacular we've embarked on, and we believe once you've run the Tour du Mont Blanc, you'll feel the same way!

The Voyageurs Houseboat Tour in the lake enjoying the night lights during a trail running experience
Exploring Voyageurs National Park Trails by Houseboat!

It doesn't get much more "Minnesotan" than exploring the crystal clear lakes and white pine studded trails of Northern Minnesota on a 54' houseboat!  When looking for a tour that "screamed" Minnesota, we thought about white pines, rocky pine needle covered trails, clear lakes, walleye fishing and boating.  What combines ALL of these elements better than a HOUSEBOAT!  On this tour you will be treated to some of the most remote, beautiful and wild trails Minnesota has to offer within Voyageurs National Park - the nations only water-based national park consisting of nearly 50% water.  In Voyageurs National Park, we'll ply the clear waters of gigantic Kabetogema and Namakan Lakes along the Canadian border to find the best trails the park has to offer.  We'll spend part of the day running rugged, rocky, pine needle covered trails exploring inland lakes and views over blue waters and the other part relaxing on the houseboat, sipping your favorite drink, sliding down the slide into the cool lake waters and possibly even dipping a line to see if we can catch a tasty walleye or feisty smallmouth bass.  Along the trail you'll have the opportunity to see the wildest of northern wildlife including moose, wolves or black bear.  The days will be relaxing and evenings joyful around a shoreline campfire, listening to the loons eerie call and looking up at the star studded skies in hopes of seeing the spectacular Northern Lights!  This tour will be one to remember and something unlike any other trail running tour you may have experienced.  Join us in August to explore the Northern Minnesota waters of Voyageurs National Park on a houseboat!

Running the Farthest Edge of the North American Continent on the EPIC East Coast Trail

The East Coast Trail is a trail so grand that you'll have the chance to look down on the backs of whales from high upon a cliff and see giant icebergs float by on the ocean current.  It's a trail unknown to many, but perhaps one of the finest on the North American continent.  It's a trail with a "European" feel that's actually closer to Great Britain than it is to Vancouver.  The East Coast Trail stretches over 200 miles along the Eastern edge of the island province of Newfoundland in Canada.  Relatively short road walks in quaint coastal villages connect the various segments of trail, and we hand pick the very best segments for this trip, connecting long point-to-point stretches.  The East Coast Trail, the most easterly long distance trail on the continent,  links charming fishing villages with the historic yet cosmopolitan capital city of St. John's.

View of the ocean from the East Coast Trail during a guided trail running experience
The landscape of the East Coast Trail is stunning, with wide-open coastal barrens that provide endless views, high fjord-like cliffs dropping precipitously into the ocean below, sea stacks and arches, wild beaches and coves, waterfalls and powerful waves and even a geyser-like blowhole along the rocky shoreline called "The Spout".  While the trail is generally well-marked, it is a challenging and sometimes technical route along the coastline.  You'll find steep climbs and descents, slippery rocks and roots and sometimes boulders and rocks to clamber through.

Along with the scenic natural wonders along the trail, you'll enjoy charming coastal fishing villages each with their own unique character, from the colorful cottages of Quidi Vidi to one of the many active fishing villages like Petty Harbor.  We'll spend our evenings in local Bed and Breakfasts along the coast, enjoying homemade dinners with a hearty breakfast each morning.  Each B&B along the way brings it's own local charm and simplicity.  We'll also spend a couple of nights in St. John's, The City of Legends, enjoying evenings out on the town and sampling native Newfoundland cuisine - Cod tongue anyone?  Join us along the East Coast Trail for what is sure to be one of the most memorable trips you've ever taken!

Tour Details

View of a small ocean villages from the East Coast Trail during a guided trail running experience
Duration/Mileage:  7 days / 7 nights / 100 miles
Difficulty:  Advanced - We consider this tour advanced due to the extremely technical nature of much of the trail tread.  There are many challenging and technical aspects of this trail.  Runners must be prepared for very steep, rocky and rooty terrain.  Running isn't possible on some segments of the trail and you should be prepared to do a bit of power walking.  There are also numerous steps to climb and traverse.  Practice climbing steps prior to the tour.  The trail is remote and inaccessible in locations.  Rain and slippery conditions can also factor in. The East Coast Trail includes significant elevation change daily with some navigation challenges, sporadic access to support vehicle, and potential stormy weather.  Altitude is not an issue on this tour as we are generally at or near sea level.  There are locations along cliff tops that can be challenging for those with acrophobia.  The trail runs along steep cliffs for many miles.  Be prepared for wet weather.  We will be running 7 days with distances between 6.2 (optional day off in St. John's) and 19.1 miles.

"Adventure Running provided access to a unique trail in a unique environment. They did it with enthusiasm, graciously and with good provisions. Wonderful hosts who cared about and provided well for their guests."

Segment of the Zion to Bryce Canyon Country guided trail tour experience
Running the Red Rock Country between Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks

The southwestern corner of Utah offers some of the most fascinating and awe-inspiring landscapes in the desert Southwest.  Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks are the bookends for our exploration of the red rock country connecting these two popular national parks.  We’ll run and explore trails through towering cliffs and slickrock canyons, with colorful spires and natural arches that will inspire you and leave you breathless, seeking what lies around the next corner.  Our trails will take us past immense spires and redrock walls, through cedar, spruce and bristlecone pine forests and up to ridges with views you won’t forget.  We’ll run smooth singletrack high above Zion National Park with views that will leave you speechless.  The flowing, smooth singletrack trails and downhills of the Red Canyon country around Bryce Canyon National Park are perfect for trail running and will make you almost want to climb back up so you can run back down again (almost!).  In the evening we’ll retire to comfortable lodging facilities where dinner will be served and stories will be told.  Join us in November for this memorable trail running tour through country you won’t soon forget.  This tour was very popular last year and we plan to add a second tour date when this tour date fills.

Exploring the Wonders of the Cinque Terre

Hillside view of Italian coast town where the Cinque Terre Tour guided trail running experience begins
The Cinque Terre, or “the five lands” as they translate literally, are comprised of lovely pastel colored villages wedged into steep rock promontories over the sparkling Mediterranean Sea.  “The Five Lands” are the coastal villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore.  Each village has a unique spirit and due to the steep and harsh terrain which was for centuries only accessible via small cobbled mule trails, the Cinque Terre can feel as if it’s lost in time.  This relative remoteness with its steep slopes and cliffs and secluded bays is what makes the Cinque Terre such a special place, and why it’s now a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site.  On our tour, we will explore the marvelous terraced terrain of vineyards and the ancient paths that are being restored by local trail runners and our friends at Cinque Terre Trekking.  These trails link the five lands and carry intrepid explorers in trail running shoes out of the Cinque Terre and all the way to Levanto in the north and Portovenere and La Spezia to the south.  We’ll run high above the Mediterranean on dizzying trails that look down hundreds of feet to the sparkling waters below.  We’ll explore ancient villages and old churches and monasteries.  We’ll also run through the remarkable terraced vineyards with their terrazzamento or system of meticulous, ancient dry stone retaining walls which prevent the precious soil from being washed down into the sea.  With vineyards come wine, and we’ll sample the best wines in all of Europe and learn the craft from local winemakers.  While in the Cinque Terre we’ll stay in comfortable lodging along the sea and take in the night life each evening while sampling the delicious local cuisine.  We visit the five lands during a slower time of the year in which we’ll be able to really get a feel for the local culture and avoid the industrial tourism that takes place in more busy times of the year.  This tour will be an amazing mix of awesome and challenging trail running on rugged and almost impossibly steep trails with a relaxing and rewarding dive into the lovely culture, cuisine and creativity of the people who call this astonishing area home.  Join us in 2023 for this once in a lifetime trip to the remarkable "five lands" of Italy!

Duration/Mileage:  6 days / 68.1 miles
Difficulty:  Intermediate - This tour includes some exceptionally rugged and steep trail, one long day of almost 20 miles with significant elevation change, long climbs and descents, many rock steps, challenging trail navigation in places, little access to support vehicle, very steep trails and slopes could induce acrophobia in places, language barrier, access to refreshments in local villages we pass through.

"Adventure Running Co. offered me everything I could've wanted in a trail running adventure. They planned out the route and took care of all logistics, so that I just had to show up and run. The Wonderland Trail was beautiful and challenging to run, and I never would've run it on my own without their support. Both their guidance on the trail and their hosting/cooking at the campsites were top-notch."
